It's a nervous tic motion of the head to the left
TGI Friday('s)
No, not the food/restaurant/thingy, but the phrase. I'm really feeling it right now. My lil' bro has stayed at his apartment this Friday to party it up (or so I believe), so I have the computer all for myself, all night long. No worrying about wether someone's coming to tell me I've sat too long or that it's that person's turn. Just me, my new cordless mouse (which is heaven in the form of a mouse by the way... and it's candy apple red... you're so jealous right now aren'tcha?!), Andrew Bird on my headphones, a live show by The Decemberists which I'm downloading and will listen to in it's entirety later, and just a general sense of Friday-esque well-being.
"Are you cool? ...I am cool."
Usually just casually watching TV doesn't do that much for me. I might be slightly entertained, bored or just careless. But tonight when I sat down to just spend some time with my mom, I actually was feeling stupid in a intelligent way. I'm not sure if I'll explain exactly
how I felt like that when talking about my TV-night, but we'll see won't we?! Anyway, first up was the politically satirical Norwegian show "Nytt Paa Nytt" and it wasn't all that good at first. The guests made really bad jokes which they of course found terribly funny, and laughed at themselves. But admittedly there were a few jokes that hit home, so it wasn't a complete waste watching it.
Next up was the talk show of all talk shows in Norwegian television: Foerst & Sist. Which means "First & Last". I wasn't actually going to watch it at first seeing as I was quite disappointed at how the tv-night had started, but when I heard that frontman of Turbonegro, Hank Von Hell, was one of the guests I
had to see it. The concept of this talk-show is that you first get one guest in, and then all the others, and then they all sit there and comes with their views on what the other's are talking about and stuff like that. It's a very good concept when the guests are interesting, if they're not... well, it goes without saying that it just doesn't work. At first it was Hank by his lonesome, talking to the host about his former heroin-addiction, and how the use of methadone as a substitution-drug works for people who are trying to get off the drug-wagon. Learned something new there. But it wasn't until other people got on that it got really interesting.
There was a sociologist talking about "Tidsklemma", I don't know the English term, but it's the thought that we don't have enough time to do stuff we want to do because we have to long work hours, etc. And this sociologist had a new term which he introduced and that was "Fritidsklemma". He meant that we don't have trouble with too short an amount of time to do what we want to do, but that we rather have too much free time. The common man thinks that he has too much work hours and that it has increased over the years, when in reality over the last ten years we have had a decrease in work hours. I might've presented it in a bad way, but it was very interesting to see Hank's viewpoints and how they went back and forth. He's a very wise man that Hank. There was also some other fun conversation-topics, but they've slipped my mind at the moment.
And finally, to cap off the evening, I watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It was , as always, funny and interesting (interesting how I can't find a synonym for interesting, isn't it?). He had a guest on the show who had written a book on Islam called something like: The Origin, The Evolution, And The Future Of Islam. Seeing as this is the next thing we're going to get into in religion-class at school, I watched with great interest (there I go again, I'm incorrigible!). The author talked quite seriously about Islam, and then Jon came with relevant questions and his own views on what the author was talking about, Stewart is also a very wise man in my opinion, but he always "ruined" it by saying something a bit irrelevant and humorous. I got the feeling that the book by this author was quite good, so I think I'll read it if I remember to look it up later on.
And all this left me feeling stupid in an intelligent, or intelligent in a stupid way... Whichever floats your floating-machine.
I've now listened through most of The Decemberist's live show, and I have to admit it's not all that bad. Maybe I'll have to pick up some of their stuff later on. But my main priority on the album-buying side of things now is Party Animals by
Turbonegro. Looking forward to that.
I think that's all for this time, but I have more in store for you! I stumbled upon a gem I will most likely post about tomorrow. Wait in great anticipation!
Remember to floss yer choppers!
I'm out.
